Do I really need an apartment broker to find a place to rent in Manhattan?

I've heard that I need to hire and pay an apartment broker to find a place in Manhattan. Is this true or can I find a place on my own? This seems weird to me as I've never had a problem finding a place to rent on my own in any other city.

This is like saying "Do I really need a Realtor?" anywhere in the country. The answer is always going to be it depends on how much work YOU want to put into search for an apartment. How much is your time worth to you?

In the case of a Realtor if you hire a good quality one they are going to steer you away from bad neighborhoods and potential problems you might not know exist.

I'm sure In Manhattan it's the same thing with an apartment broker. They probably know more about things like how close you need to live to your potential work, where you can park if your going to own a car, what places might be rent controlled, etc. and unless your willing to do a massive amount of research you might think your getting a great place when really your not.

Just my two cents.

I have no problem doing a little work to find an apartment, that's not the issue. The issue is that I have heard from people that you don't even have a chance of contacting landlords or finding places that are for rent without a broker. I know how close I need to live to work and where to park my car - I don't need a broker or realtor for that. I just want to know if I have any chance of even getting a hold of landlords or finding out what places are available to rent without a broker.

It sounds like a myth, but I would not be surprised if it's just a recommended procedure, I am sure a broker with knowledge of the area could help you get what you are looking for.

However if you are looking for deal or just a place to live you could probably check any classified listings, for example Craigslist has plenty of entries for Manhattan, no brokers needed.
