Recommendations for an Asian vacation?
I'm hoping to visit China next summer. I have never been to Asia, and would like to check out some other countries while I'm there. I have a few in mind, but I'd like to know your recommendations. Please tell me where I should go and why (maybe one or two essential attractions). I am also curious as to how easy it is to get to different countries in that region - Asia is a big place, and I won't have forever to look around. Therefore I want to spend as few hours sitting in planes as possible!

If you're going to 10 days or less focus just on China. There are three major cities you have to see in China: Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and you'll need a couple of days to visit each with travel.
It is possible to stop in Japan, but you really need a full week to see Japan.
If you're going for two weeks I would stop in Tokyo for four or five days and spend nine days in China, seeing Shanghai and Beijing.
Flight times can be calculated here:

Four hours: Tokyo Hong Kong
Three hours: Tokyo Beijing
~Three hours: Tokyo Shanghai 2 hrs. 39 minutes.
~ Two hours: Shanghai Beijing
Two hours: Shanghai Hong Kong
Note: These are just flight times. You're looking at an hour to and form each airport to your hotel on average, plus you have to be at the airport an hour before. Add an hour of check in and check out time and you'll add four/five hours to each flight for total travel time between packing/checking out/travel to the airport/wait time.
In other words, it's gonna kill 1/2 to a full day to travel between each city on average. If you visit three cities you are looking at two extra legs of travel, which means you will lose 1.5 to two days. Not horrible, but you probably want to keep it to three cities in two weeks, two cities in a week to 10 days.
Unless you are one of those backpacking type folks who likes to carry everything they have with them. In that case you have no packing to do!
