Recommendations for Amsterdam?

I'm going to Amsterdam next week for about 8 days. What are the must see places to go to this time of the year?
Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I went to Amsterdam a few years ago.
I loved it. You can walk a lot but beware of the bicycles.
Places to go
The flower market is beautiful
There is a flee market in Waterloo Plain. I bought a used coat there.
Ana Frank's house. (Prinsengracht 267, Jordaan quarter near Westerkerk.)
The Begijnhof is a closed neighborhood, the oldest house in the country is there.

You will also see the Heineken brewery.
The zoo is small but nice.
There are hundreds of museums (Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt, Madame Tussaud, Erotic Museum).

Book a tour to see the country-side to Volendam (where they still make wooden shoes).

I backpacked across Europe after college for a month or two. There are only two things I remember about Amsterdam: Going to the red light district and going to the Hard Rock Cafe there.

The red light district was interesting. Honestly, I wasn't interested in anything that was offered, but I did indulge in the experience by going to a show. I wasn't impressed. I recommend going to the red light district for the experience and to say you were there. That's about it.

I walked into the Hard Rock Cafe, saw a bunch of college kids drinking and smoking weed (and the place smelled of it). I wasn't into that either, so turned around and went somewhere else.

We explored the city a bit, but nothing else really comes to mind.

Amsterdam was the last city we visited, so we might have been done with the whole thing (I certainly didn't want to see another art gallery), so take these recommendations with that in mind.

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Amsterdam? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. Borrow a Bicycle

There are a number of companies throughout the city that rent bicycles. All the locals are doing it, it's good exercise, and it's pretty much access all areas. All in all, cycling’s the best way to take in the city.
2. Search for the Seven Vermeers

In addition to finding the master Vermeer's seven paintings on display, you can also discover some of the scenes that inspired many of his other works. But don't let it stop you checking out the Rembrandts, Van Goghs, Van Eycks and Mondrians scattered around the city's fantastic galleries.
3. Stuff yourself with Stroopwafel

Stroopwafels are a sort of deliciously gooey cookie or waffle… Very popular as an accompaniment to tea and coffee throughout the Netherlands, they're perhaps not one for the calorie-conscious!
4. Take it Easy in a Coffee Shop

It is Amsterdam, beacon of tolerance and haven of liberal values, after all. You don't have to partake in it, but as a fairly central aspect of traveling to the city, perhaps you should at least see what all the fuss is about.
5. Roam the Red Light District

Ditto No.4. Have a wander about in the Red Light District, and see the city's fascinating, seamy underside

@shadowemokitty: This certainly looks like you cut and paste this from somewhere. Not a problem, but you really need to cite your source please.
