Recommendation for a home all-in-one printer?

  • print/copy/scan at home
  • network ready (does not need to be wireless)
  • multi color cartridges (1 blk/wht, 3 color)
  • decent picture quality
  • mostly print word docs, maps, web page info.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

I recommend and use the Canon Pixma MP600. It does everything from printing to scanning, and has color. It's also inexpensive, and does a great job for all in one use.

The good:
Inexpensive; high quality prints; fast print speeds overall, particularly quick with photo printing.

The bottom line:
The Canon Pixma MP600 occupies the sweet spot between quality and price. It's one of our favorite photo all-in-ones for home users.

Specifications:
Office Machine Functions: Copier , Printer , Scanner ; Printer type: Multifunction printer ; Printing Technology: Ink-jet

Wasn't it the pixma series that takes 6 ink cartridges instead of the usual 3 color/1black? I was a bit shocked when we got one of these (the Pixma line, not this model) for my dad and he told me that. Not necessarily a deal breaker, but something worth noting when looking at such a device.

I'm happy with my Brother 5460CN series, which is pretty much what you describe - scanner (for the kids' artwork), copier (for the occasional legal document), mostly used for just printing web pages, maps, etc. Network ready, good install program - got it working with both my windows and network boxes. Pretty sure this is a wired-only printer, though - not wireless.

Just a quick note about purchasing any printer. Look at the cost of the ink before the cost of the printer.

When you narrow down your choices to a few, make sure you can easily get inexpensive ink for the printer.

Personally, I like cheap ink refill kits for day-to-day use but purchase my ink at Costco because it's $20 - $50 cheaper than anywhere else. So for me, choosing a printer that took ink available at Costco was important.

Regardless of where you buy your ink, make sure that you figure out how much the ink costs. Some manufacturers hose you for certain models of ink cartridges.
