Recommend a good GPS app for the iPhone, that works without data (cell or [[wifi]) access.
I live in Canada and will be travelling to the us. I want to be able to use my iPhone 3gs as a gps too. I will not have data access so I need something that works offline. At a bare minimum I need it to have maps of California. Best would be full maps of us and Canada. Something that works well for walking would be a great bonus. If all else fails I will buy the tomtom app which is about 89 dollars for the us/Canada version so I am looking for something cheaper, or with good support for walking and driving.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I can't recommend anything from personal experience, but there is a great site here, with lots of info on what's available and how it stacks up:

From what I can gather, if you are not going to have a net connection, or not a reliable one, you need an app that stores the maps on the device itself. Apart from TomTom and a few other similar priced ones there is a much cheaper one called CoPilot Live North America that is listed at $35.
Should be at least worth a close look before you splash out at least double that on one of the others. The commenters on the article seem happy enough with it anyway.

Thanks for the awesome recommendation on CoPilot Live North America - it's only $30 right now and looks like just what i need. it doesn't appear to have support for walking, but for the huge price it's worth a bit of an inconvenience!
