Wonderful flights of fancy!
They're anything but "real", and I think that's a very unfortunate misnomer that the genre picked up back in the early days of reality tv. I see them more as Game Shows! They're all contests of some time (whether the prizes be money, love, jobs, or what-have-you!).
And these "game shows" are wonderfully entertaining in the same way a great trashy romance novel feels so good during the summer. We all need to let our brains unwind and enjoy some just good, naughty pleasure. And in the "reality world" there's a little bit of something for everybody!
My favorites include:
The Amazing Race
Big Brother
Dating in the Dark (don't stone me for that!)
Survivor
Hell's Kitchen
The competition and blending of personalities is so engaging - and at the very least, they make me feel good about myself. "Hey, at least I'm not as messed up as that guy!"

I love reality tv, although I'm not too sure how much is unscripted but it is interesting to watch how others react to a new situation, how they work together with other people they've never met, and how they find a way to find common ground with people they would have never spoken to if not brought together by the show. I think group dynamics are fascinating especially when they are complete strangers, it may not be everyone's cup of tea but I certainly enjoy it.

Definitely a guilty pleasure for me. I prefer some of them to regularly scripted shows. Favorites are idol, survivor, amazing race and i used to watch big brother but dropped it two seasons ago. It seems the drama on these shows is addictive. It is like a car crash - you just can't turn away and stop watching. You just never know what is going to happen next and half of the time I am just amazed at how people are acting on tv when they know that everyone they know is watching them. I wish they were more real than they are. I don't like the fact that the producers feel the need to reshoot certain scenes or to manipulate story lines. I think it would be better if it was left alone.
