Reading George Sodini's diary paints him as lonely, not mad, so why did he he think killing random women made his suicide more meaningful?

On George Sodini's diary/journal web page http://georgesodini.com/20090804.htm you definitely get the picture of a very lonely person. He does some self analyzation and introspection trying to figure out why he is lonely and for the most part seems like a pretty sane/logical person. A very, lonely person, but a sane one. Or sane except when he references his "project", which is to kill some women in a Tuesday night aerobics class. I can’t reconcile his fairly sane recounting of the details of his life with his mad desire to kill strangers in his "exit plan".

About 7 years ago, I too was desperately lonely after I had been divorced for a couple years. I got to the point that I contemplated suicide on a daily basis. Fortunately for me I was able to make some friends that eventually led to remarriage. But never when I was so desperately lonely and suicidal, did I consider killing others as well as myself. I just can’t relate to what he was thinking.

For the most part, he doesn't sound like a madman in his journal or in his advertisement for selling his 1994 Saturn http://home.comcast.net/~space777/Saturn/pics/index.htm. Maybe a little anal retentive, but otherwise he is well spoken and seems to have a fairly realistic view of things and of his own impact on the world.

I did see a couple videos of his that are a bit creepy, but even so he still sounds fairly logical and rational.

So why would he do such a mad thing as murdering other people, especially people he doesn't even know? It would make a little more sense if he murdered some of the people he profiles in his journal as partially making him who he is (still reprehensible, but at least more logical). But I can’t understand how even a madman would see how killing strangers would make his death more meaningful.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well, explaining why people make such horrible decisions is always difficult. My guess is that he wanted people to know about him once he was gone, and the best way to do that is to do something newsworthy. One wonders why these people don't choose their last act in life to be handing out $100 bills, but maybe they know that killing sprees are covered better than giving sprees.

I'm not convince that every person who decides to do such terrible things is actually crazy. I think that each of us underestimates the damage that dark thoughts have on our mind. Knowing and believing God is the best way to keep yourself from dark, damaging thoughts. Probably George Sodini's years of incorrectly coping with loneliness led him to dwell on very self-centered thoughts, to the point that he didn't value anyone who could not benefit him.

Each of us has a choice to react appropriately to the good and bad that comes into our lives. If you react correctly, you grow and become a better person. Otherwise, you begin down a path that leads to self-centeredness, bitterness, hatred, and in some cases, violence.
