Random question: explain exactly what each linebacker's job is

I'm looking to learn more about a 3-4 defense in football. So can you provide a good, concise explanation for what each of the four linebackers does? In a 3-4 defense, each linebacker (usually the "mike" "ted" "will" and "sam" positions) has a different job. I'd like to know what that is.

Thanks!

The 3-4 defense is a basic defensive formation, devised by Bud Wilkenson at the University of Oklahoma in the late 1940s. It consists of 3 lineman and 4 linebackers in the front seven (thus 3-4).

The role each linebacker plays in a 3-4 defense is as follows:

There are 2 external (outside) linebackers, and two internal (inside) linebackers. The "Will" is the weak side inside linebacker, the strong side or middle inside linebacker is the "Mike", while "Sam" is the strong outside linebacker and "Jack" is the hybrid DE/LB.

The general strategy is as follows:

"Outside linebackers in the 3-4 defense tend to be larger in comparison to linebackers in a base 4-3 defense. They are also often players who would play DE in a 4-3 defense as situational pass rushing specialists but who otherwise may not fit the expected role of a DE being somewhat smaller in size. Outside linebackers should be able to drop into pass coverage, rush the passer or read and react. When it comes to the inside linebackers, one is generally a run stuffing player who is better able to handle offensive linemen and stop running backs when the offense features a running play, while the other is often a smaller, faster player who excels in pass coverage. However, the smaller or cover LB should also be able to scrape and plug running lanes decently."

It didn't really answer the question, but I tipped you a M$ for your time. Thanks.

Thanks for the basic info. But from my understanding, each player has his own job--for example, the Sam has a different job than the Will, and the two inside linebackers do different tasks as well. They're not just redundant parts doing the same job. Wikipedia is good for a basic overview, but I'm looking for some more detailed information on each piece of the defense.

Thanks again!

Answering questions as you just did is not appropriate for the site, keep in mind that if you continue to just "answer" questions so you gain the points your account can be deleted for gaming the system.

In the future, only answer questions in which you actually plan to put a true answer.

Please do not respond just for bonus points. That is considered cheating the system and could cause you to lose your account.

I'm sure there are plenty of questions out there that you can answer. Good luck and welcome to Mahalo Answers!
