Quick question:: Whats the rule for an underground musician/singer to put a cover of a mainstream artists song on the album?
For example:
If I do a cover of Kelis "Keep It Down" song, am I able to put it on an album of other music sung by me? Lets assume that I would be giving away the CD that has the cover on it --- No profit made.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You have to give the artist proper credit on the album for royalty retrieval. Let's say you cover the song "Keep It Down" on your album and your album becomes increasingly popular. If it gets picked up to be played on the radio, on television or in a movie, mechanical royalty companies have to know who the original artist is so that they can be payed properly. If you don't credit them, you're in danger of being sued for copyright infringement.
