Anyways, any car will work to atleast transport 1 bike, but depending on the car, you can always get a car rack which is the ideal way to go. If you have a tow hitch you can also get one of those tow hitch bike racks, which wont scratch your roof at all.
Long distances, i would say get a gas efficient sedan with roof racks!

Take 1 wheel off the bike, and it fits great in the trunk, also
