What is a great patio umbrella?

What is a quality patio umbrella?

I am new to the process of buying patio furniture and so far so good but I am a bit stumped on shopping for the umbrella. I have a great patio umbrella base but would like some help finding a great patio umbrella to finish the package.

What are the features of a quality patio umbrella?
Round? or Square? or Rectangle? Why?
What would a "reasonably priced" quality patio umbrella cost?
Are there any hidden pitfalls or do's & don'ts about patio umbrellas?

The 50lb base I have is compatible with 1 7/8”, 1 3/4” and 1 1/2” umbrella poles and the umbrella itself ideally would be 9ft across or less to fit nicely over the deck space.

Back in the day when I owned properties... had quite a bit of money, and was by todays standards 'well off', I remember picking up an umbrella from Smith & Hawkin.

In the early 90's this company was known for extremely well built outdoor furniture that would last your lifetime if you took care of it. I remember I picked up a square green umbrella with the innards and pole made of teak. It matched my teak table. (teak will automatically be more expensive).

Nowadays, you can find their furniture at Target of all places, and I still trust their quality. As you can see by looking at this page of them through Target, the price ranges from $150 to almost $580.

Go with what your budget can afford. As far as shape? That really makes no matter except to your own taste and what you think would look fantastic on your patio. Here is my only and biggest warning with these puppies. When you're done with them, close them. High wind and sudden bad weather can knock them around and in extreme cases break them. You wouldn't think of leaving your nice carry umbrella open and tied to an outside balcony, would you? Don't leave these open to the elements and you should have one that will shade you for many summers to come.
PS: one with tilting capability helps with the angle of the sun and comes in handy!
PPS: also look into getting some solar powered umbrella lights... they rock!

(also S & H sells veils and netting for the buggiest part of the season too)

Can't wait to drop by with some hotdogs and bug spray.
Happy almost summer Budda!

B, have your considered buying one of those "sail" umbrellas? The are reasonably priced. The are made of a synthetic woven material that allows filtered sunlight and a breeze to flow through. They do require that you come up with somekind on support systems.
If you have your heart set on an umbrella, look into the "butterfly" umbrellas available at HD. They have an offset pole that accommodates a vwery large umbrella. They are durable and self storing when not in use. They a -inexpensive compared to standard umbrellas with base.

I'm curious... what is a 'butterfly umbrella'? Do you have a link that shows and describes one?
