Stunt cars make the most versatile cars. I would choose the Carson GT Concept as it is the most well rounded car in the game. It's got a good boost so it is good for either racing or stunts. It's also fairly strong and durable.
Also, check out the Jansen 88 special, a flying DeLorean. It will be released as a DLC in 2009. I can't wait!

For what you're looking for, many people recommend stunt cars. They have better performance, allowing for tricks, at a sacrifice of speed. The "Gamestop" car has a popular following and is a good mix of speed and handling.

From what I hear, the Carbon Montgomery Hawker is the fastest. It's handling isn't the greatest, but it is acceptable. For what you're looking for, many people recommend stunt cars. I would say that the PCPD Special is by far the fastest in the game. As with regards to versatility and great handling, I'd go with a stunt car as well. The Montgomery Hawker Solo is great, but you get it very late in the game. Early on, the Carbon X12 is probably the best. But it depends on your driving style, I'd say...

You're right on the DeLorean -- I think there are a number of great things coming from them in 2009...
