Unfortunately this does not seem to be the case. While, yes, the PS3 is region free, the PS2 games are not. Thus, you would need a PAL region PS3 to play the PAL region PS2 games. Pretty lame, in my opinion.

Will Singstar Sing along with Disney for the PS2 in PAL Regions work with the US Playstation 3 Singstar?
An update was just released for Singstar that allows you to play the songs off the old Playstation 2 discs on Singstar for the PS3. This will work on PS3's with and without backwards compatibility. Does anyone know if, since it's just reading the music files off the PS2 disc, a person can play Singstar: Sing along with Disney, which was only released in PAL Regions on the US Playstation 3 with this update? I've read that the PS3 is region free so I don't see why not honestly. But I would like to know for certain before I buy either game.

While I see what you're saying, this seems to be a different type of backwards compatibility. This patch apparently works on PS3's like the 40GB which is not normally Backwards compatible. From what I understand, what it does is reads the specific music files off the PS2 disc. It doesn't actually play the old PS2 game. So while you're source is correct in most cases. This patch may be different.
