LBP epitomizes the idea of "simple but powerful". It is a simple platformer, which harkens back to the days of NES Mario, and such, but the community driven level design keeps it constantly growing and changing. And, the community driven levels don't constantly get bogged down with crap. The rating and commenting tools make it easy to weed out the badly designed levels from the elite ones.
The controls are simple, just jump and grab, but the design of the levels adds tons of character to the game. Not to mention, it is an incredibly good looking game.
And, above all else, Media Molecule continuously supports it. Granted, all of the add-ons come at a cost, but even if you don't buy the level packs, you can play the levels created with them. And, if you're not into playing dressup, then you don't need to get the costumes. If all you want is to play the game, then you don't miss out on anything by not buying the add-ons.
Overall it's just a great formula, and executed really well.
