Why is it inexpensive for magazine companies to print full color magazines, but it's so expensive for me to make full page color printouts?

Magazines are printed in color where a large portion of each page is often covered with ink. From what I've read, the actual cost of printing these magazines is low compared to other costs that magazine companies have.

If I wanted to print a high quality color page where a large portion of the page was covered in ink (like with magazines), it could easily cost me $1 per page. Whether I do it with consumer-based printing supplies or take it to a printshop, the cost is high.

How do magazines companies make magazines that have many pages where front and back are covered with a lot of ink, and only charge a few dollars each magazine?

Well, magazine companies buy their ink and paper in bulk, so they get it a lot cheaper. =]
I believe that they reduce the quality of their images, so that they are still visually appealing, but use up less ink. I'm not sure on that, but it seems reasonable to me.
So, you could try reducing the quality of your images using an image editing program, like photoshop or something cheaper. that certainly use more basic colors.

And it's a different printing technique of course. If they would use inkjet printers, it would be terribly expensive too. Their printing technology is optimized for very large volume printing.

If they would need to print a single sheet of paper, it would probably be very expensive too.
