"Mount Vernon Street, the prettiest street on Beacon Hill, Boston's prettiest residential neighborhood."

If you're a lifetime west coaster like me, even strolling just down Beacon Street is a great time. Plenty of houses with (what I think is) pretty quintessential Bostonion architecture.

And you can catch peeks of the Charles River in between houses-- especially right by the New England College of Optometry building.

agreed; beacon hill is gorgeous. it's one of the shiny memories i have from visiting Boston last summer.

it's especially nice at night, when the row houses are all lit up and the vintage street lamps are glowing, and the big monolith atop Beacon Hill itself just kinda looms over it all.

it's really pretty and i'd highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed walking Commonwealth Ave in Boston's Back Bay. Lots of well preserved buildings and it terminates at the massive Boston Commons park.

According to Frommer's, walking is the perfect way to see Boston. Public transportation is accessible and the neighborhoods are all close together. If you're shuffling through the Fenway District, The Boston Globe suggests hitting Boston Beer Works', El Pelon Taqueria, the Cask n' Falgon bar, Audubon Circle and the Trattoria Toscana.

Looking for a guide? The company Walking Tours of Historic Boston books walking tours for both visitors and locals.

Also, a great book to help you plan a delicious walk around the city is "Boston Neighborhoods: A Food Lover's Walking, Eating and shopping Guide to Ethnic Enclaves in and around Boston"

Charlestown.

Not only is the USS Constituition (Old Ironsides) parked there, but the cobblestone roads and colonial architecture are the best-preserved in the entire city.

There's also the Bunker Hill Monument, where one of the most important battles of the Revolution was fought ("Don't fire till you see the whites of their eyes!") ... however -- don't tell anyone -- the battle was ACTUALLY fought on Breed's Hill. So, yes, the monument is in the wrong place. oops.

As a close second, I'd have to go with Newbury Street. It's a bit of a scene, hipster-central, but still pretty cool:

The Frank Gehry-designed 'old Tower Records building' is at the end of the street.

And of course, "The Pru", aka the Prudential Building, looms over everything in the background:

I'd have to agree with Mark that Charlestown is definitely the prettiest area for a walk. You have the architecture as well as the water.
