Teddy Roosevelt said in a speech to the Baltimore Saengerfest in 1903, "No greater contribution to American social life could possibly be made than by instilling into it the capacity for Gemuthlichkeit."

Not just any alcohol. Beer. For different reasons, neither Egypt nor Israel celebrates Oktoberfest, which is a darn shame. In fact, none of the Middle Eastern countries which are in such constant conflict and turmoil brew much good beer. I find that very telling.
Also note that Egypt's only famous diplomat, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, who was crucial in the talks you mentioned, as well as becoming UN Secretary General, was from the Coptic Christian minority. The Copts brew both the poor Stella beer and an excellent Aswan Stout.
