Porn Bailout? Is it a good or bad idea? Before answering, please read on!

Okay, when I saw the headline that said the Porn Industry was seeking a bailout, I thought it was a joke. However, it appears to be true. See Porn Bailout for more information.

Now, I'm sure most people have a idea of why people wouldn't want to bailout the porn industry, allow me to present the opposite side of the coin:

Believe it or not, porn often provides us with a lot of new high-technology. Just a few things it has provided us with:
1. Camcorders and VHS
2. Video and Audio streaming
3. Fee-based services
4. Geo-location software
5. Segmented content
6. Pay-per-view TV
7. Online payment forms
8. Live Chat
9. Broadband
10. Traffic optimizing
11. 3G Mobile Services

See the following articles for more information on how Porn has provided us with technical revolutions:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2002/mar/03/internetnews.observerfocus
http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/technology/2004-03-09-onlineporn_x.htm

http://www.law.indiana.edu/fclj/pubs/v49/no1/johnson.html

So, if Porn is truly in trouble, do you think they deserve a bailout? Why or why not?

I did not place this in the NSFW category because this is not about porn but about the industry as a whole.

This is a very good attempt at marketing.

While the negative effects of the economy likely have an effect on the porn industry, it is for the most part based on monthly subscriptions. These subscriptions are billed monthly and are usually of low enough value to go un-noticed on a credit card statement.

Beyond economics, it's also important that porn has truly become an international business. So while the world economy is down, the porn industry has a wide base of income to draw from.

While new ventures and innovation may in fact be starting to lag, it's doubtful that this arena has experienced the same hardships as the auto industry.

When you say "marketing" are you suggesting that the technology accredited to porn is not? I'm curious since the articles that I found are from reliable sources with no porn connection (that I've seen).

No, I'm saying that this was a blatant marketing move to get Flit, Francis and their products in the news and on the minds of people. Both of these people are very good at alternative marketing methods and this is EXACTLY what is going on here.

Rob's right. Everyone knows a bailout for porn will never fly. They just saw an opportunity to grab a little attention and took it.

The only reason Porn was the first to innovate in the fields you list is because that's where the money was, not because of anything inherent about porn. If the industry is suffering (which I doubt) then there are no longer any broader benefits to society, so a bailout is not justified on those terms.

It's not because "that's where the money was." The porn industry directly affects which technologies progress and which don't. When faced with two or more technologies, the technology that the porn industry decides to use flourishes whereas the other technologies "die out."

There is no support that there was money for the porn industry by choosing VHS over BetaMax. Your point is made, but your support for your argument is flawed is more of a supposition than a factual answer.

The bottom line is that the porn industry is not going to fail. Humans have an innate desire for sexual contact and sexual interaction. Do they deserve a bailout? No. Just like any other industry, they should be built or broken upon the same wheel as the rest of the economy. Do they need a bailout? Not likely. They may be suffering from reduced monthly subscriptions; however, purchases haven't shown to slow down. As a matter of fact, several large retailers (such as Amazon) have experienced INCREASES in spending during these "trying times." This goes against what we are being programmed to believe through the media.

Yes we're in a bad situation but no we don't need to bail out every single company or industry that comes begging. That defeats the purpose of a capitalistic society which is what this country has become.

No, they don't deserve a bailout. Unless the U.S. government makes porn illegal, there is always going to be someone willing to have sex on camera for whatever money is offered, unlike car makers who aren't willing to sell all their new cars for $500.

I just think that there are other industries out there that need bailout besides porn. There are essential ones like maybe healthcare, public transportation or utilities. In my opinion, they should be taken cared of first. It's a matter of setting priorities.
I don't agree with your statement that porn provides us with a lot of new high technology. I would say that porn takes advantage of the available technology to deliver their services.

There seems to be no debate that it is a major industry. If it really was on the rocks it would be worthwhile to consider government help. However, there is no reason to suppose that it really is in trouble, beyond having a typical decline in revenue from the depression. They don't have massive aging plants or burdensome union contracts. I doubt they even have much long term debt. So, why do they need the $5 billion? Probably they just want the publicity from asking.

But your question is actually if they were in trouble would they deserve help? I think that would depend on the kind of trouble the industry was in. The industry employs lots of folks and entertains lots of folks and doesn't damage the environment or kill people so other things being equal it deserves help. But, if it went out of fashion after all these centuries, that would not be something the government could help solve. If they had unfair foreign competition, the government should negotiate a solution with the foreign producers or countries. If they had a short term financial crises because the banks were not issuing loans, then the government should fix that with guaranteed loans or the like. If states and municipalities were trying to interfere with their interstate commerce, the Federal government should put a stop to that.
One problem that the porn industry may actually have is oversupply of porn that is already produced. Porn on dvd's or the internet doesn't actually wear out very quickly. People can only watch so much. If the industry needs to downsize a bit because of that then the government can only provide retraining programs for those laid off (instead of on, so to speak).

Everyone keeps thinking this is an "Advertisement" scheme. It makes me wonder if some guy (or girl) reads an article about the buyout and suddenly goes "Porn! I totally forgot about porn." Then rushes out to buy some.

Hmm, perhaps they need some new slogans:

Porn--it's time you bring it out from under your bed.

Porn means never having to say "I'm sorry."

Porn--only illegal in some states.

Porn: it's like prostitution, but legal because you brought your camera.

They are probably particularly hoping for publicity for their own brands. Each of the news articles always speaks of one guy as the publisher of Hustler and the other as the proprietor of the "Girls Gone Wild" franchise. The papers do that because the names are not quite famous enough by themselves. So it's free publicity for Hustler and for Girls Gone Wild. Both of those brands, come to think of it, are fairly notorious for dipping into politics for publicity. Hustler often issues big dollar rewards for information on new sex scandals of politicians.

Why not just have the porn stars do a bunch of car wash fundraisers in the nude, complete with live action "demos" of their work? That would definitely get the bailout rolling.

Hey, if banks and the car industry couldn't do it, why should porn stars?

Consider it this way, now everyone has an excuse to buy it. "Got help promote technology."

They don't deserve the bailout because everyone one of the services you mentioned can be invented for other reasons then porn. I understand porn may motivate to make the technology slightly quicker, but I don't think it would be significant enough for a bailout.

The porn industry is not going under, there will always be many people willing to pay for these services. Porn is entertainment, during a recession entertainment industries are in less demand and have to downsizes, it's the nature of the industry, but it will never be gone completely.
