Yes, Yahoo definitely needs to get rid of comments.
I understand that reader's opinions matter, but if most users will comment just to make stupid remarks and disfigure the content, then it's not worth it. Specially, since the content is going to be viewed by thousands of people.
The easiest solution would be to just shut it down. The only solution I could come up with is to allow other readers to report the comment as spam or inappropriate.

Specific to Comments, it wouldn't hurt to disable them, I don't see that they'd get much benefit SEO-wise from spam and idle banter or insults from users.

Would Yahoo be better off by shutting down their comments system?
I really enjoy the content on Yahoo (F1 coverage for instance), but the comments left by their "users" amount to 70% spam and 25% unrelated comments about how other users suck.
Would Yahoo be better off shutting down the system?
If not, what should they do to improve the situation?

Yahoo in general could do a lot to improve, including revamping their Answers service and listening to some of the positive suggestions they've received. I definitely prefer Mahalo, for example, to their anemic, spam-ridden Answers. Specific to Comments, it wouldn't hurt to disable them, I don't see that they'd get much benefit SEO-wise from spam and idle banter or insults from users.
