When you say "positive," do you mean just in general is it a good way to break into the music industry?
I'm not as familiar with the state of the industry in the UK, but these days in the States American Idol is as good a way as any to get some notoriety as an artist -- if your main thing is singing.
If pure vocalizing is not necessarily your strong suit or even a top priority for you, then these singing competitions might not be the right way to go about getting your music and talent out there. It's tempting to tell yourself, "Well, I'm not the best singer, but my talent in other areas will shine through and they'll be able to look past my voice and see my potential."
That's usually not the case. Another thing to think about: is your main goal to simply be as successful as possible no matter what it takes or what it means for your art? Cuz once you "make it" via one of these competitions, big corporations who -- make no mistake -- ONLY care about money will pretty much control your career forever. People like Kelly Clarkson get pretty miserable when they're not allowed to practice their art the way they see fit, you know?
So there's a lot to think about when considering going out for these high-profile talent contests...but yeah, if you've got a great voice and are a great performer and just wanna get out there at all costs, then shows like X Factor might be the way to go about it...
