Movie stars and celebrities have become political figures in the past (Al Franken right now, Gov. Schwarzenegger, Ronald Reagan) so I see no reason why Will Smith would not be able to become president if he starts to get into to politics. He already has a fan base which would make the process easier, and the fact that the racial barrier has already been broken just makes things even easier.
Will Smith defeats Obama for his incumbent term? Doubt it. Later date? There's always a chance.

However, it would be a lot of hard work for him to do so. And it seems like the quote was said in a more casual way rather than a serious way.
If Will Smith did go for politics, he'd also have to deal with the Scientology issue. Although Smith has stated that he is not a Scientologist, he has apparently taken some Scientology classes with Tom Cruise.
The thing is, whatever you think of Scientology, it is very secretive and not about full disclosure. This is not a good thing for a possible candidate for high political office when they are vetted, It would cause trouble for him from groups and organizations who would want more information.

Will Smith stated once that he would like to be President one day, do you think he will?
Now that Barack Obama will be President in January, do you think it will be possible? Or, do you think Will Smith would have become President on his own and not on the coat tails of Obama?

I think it's possible, but not probable. As others have said, actors have gotten into politics successfully. As Doc Brown said: "Ronald Reagan? The ACTOR?!" However, it would be a lot of hard work for him to do so. And it seems like the quote was said in a more casual way rather than a serious way.
