Why did no Republicans vote for the 2009 Stimulus Package, again?

Didn't they just spend weeks tweaking to to satisfy the Republicans?

1. Because a vote for the Jobs Stimulus is like admitting that their failed policies of giving tax breaks to the richest 3% of Americans is a FAILED, false policy. (Which by implication, means that the economic policies of Reagan and Bush 41 and Bush 43 were among the worst for US presidents in the modern era.)
2. Because it would be an admission that trickle down Reagan economics (Reaganomics, voo-doo economics) is really a "peeing-on" of the middle class.
3. Because the GOP would have to admit that the De-regulation and Union Busting that the GOP has engaged in (even before Reagan) were polcies that set the USA on this course of greed and excess that enabled bankers, mortgage companies the ability to steal from average Americans, depress wages and depress the net worth of the average US worker.
4. Because they don't believe in the Bill of Rights-- or why would they so actively engage in removing rights of citizens for fairness-- especially as it relates to access to capital/loans, education and healthcare? Look at how consumer rights were de-regulated out of existence such that credit card companies could ruin a person's credit for merely being late on a payment or two. Credit card de-regulation is a GOP idea.

5. Because it would be an admission that they had allowed the nation's infrastructure (roads, bridges, utilities, elec grid, school systems) to deteriorate under THEIR WATCH. Couple that with the lie that not spending money by government was a "good thing". Well, tax breaks didn't fix any roads, bridges or schools -- did it? And military spending didn't prevent 9-11 -- did it?
6. Because much of the GOP is vested in transferring wealth away from the average citizen and worker to their GOP friends, corporations and themselves. While a lot of you are losing your jobs, health care, etc., the average GOP member and supporter accumulated wealth. The GOP can't relate to the blue collar economic situation.
7. Because if they admit they've been neglecting funding of education and building of new schools w/ new technology, the GOP would have to admit that under their tenure, the USA has dropped in its education ranking and literacy rates among other industrialized nations. The USA under GOP "leadership" has dropped to the lowest quartile in literacy rates among all industrialized nations. Hell, our last "president" for 8 years couldn't even speak english.
8. Because they would have to publicly admit-- as most every reasonable economist has stated already, that Alan Greenspan's Fed policies contributed to the nation's economic woes.
9. Because they can't stand that a mixed race guy with Ivy League degrees is smarter than most of the GOP "leadership". (Racism surely isn't dead in the GOP. And Michael Steele is a sacrificial lamb. It doesn't prove much of the GOP isn't racist.)
10. Because the old GOP farts in the party still haven't gotten over the fact that Nixon was and always will be one of the biggest crooks in the world (until Bush 43 and Torture war criminal Cheney came along.)
11. They've never gotten over the public whiping they took over the illegal activities surrounding their participation of Watergate AND Iran Contra. The GOP still calls some of the Watergate and Iran Contra GOP felons "patriots".

12 . Because they are liars and don't care about you and they don't care about America. Some of the GOP hardliners are like wife beaters. When is America gonna stop making excuses for their illegal, bad behavior and put some of these criminals in jail? They don't care about the average man and woman. They don't care about world peace-- they fear monger. They are just in it for themselves and for the money.
13. Because they aren't guided by fiscal conservatism and responsibility-- not when it was they [the GOP] that ran up the largest budget deficits, engaged in the most Govt spending in the history of the nation. Hell, even Pat Buchanan thinks Bush is a faux conservative out to enrich himself and his fat cat corporate oil friends.
14. Because they would have to admit that the past 3-4 GOP administrations were in bed with oil (foreign and domestic) and had a vested interest in NOT pursuing green or new energy efficient policies which encouraged American innovation in these same areas. That the American public would be slaves to oil. Nearly every recession in the modern era happened as a result of GOP policies. 9-11, happened under a GOP president. The GOP didn't keep you "safe".
15. Because by de-regulating the FCC, relaxing FCC & Anti-trust regulations, it allowed large corporations, foreigners to buy our news and media outlets--- consolidating the voice and sources of NEWS. Having fewer news outlets makes for an ignorant, uniformed nation and people. It allows for govt propaganda to flourish. (Sounds familiar ?) except, these haters of free speech and America didn't count on the INTERNET !!

If they keep enough of America poor, unskilled (uneducated), bankrupt you through policies, try to keep you fearful of the foreign "boogey man", then they can control you and your family for at least the next 2 generations-- long enough for them to steal from the US tax payer via investment & private banks. Long enough to artificially keep oil prices high, so you go broke trying to get to work. Long enough for them to accumulate wealth that helps insulate them from the little people.

Let's see how many down votes I can rack up.
(For all you haters, I'm not a communist. I love America!! I just hate tyranny.)

I'll tell you why republicans don't vote for freebies. I'm tired of democrats promising to help the poor, when they have done nothing for me. I've never made more than 14,000 a year and the only thing I've seen the democrats do for me was one 385 dollar electrical bill payed via government. Between me and my wife we've made just over a hundred dollars a month to prevent us from collecting food stamps. Now I have to pay a hundred dollars a month for somebody else's food. It also pisses me off when people that get free housing and food complain how hard life is, when I moved irrigation pipe for only 10 cents a pipe. These socialism ideals are foolish. If congress wanted to help my family out, they should have not taxed me 700 dollars a year in medicade. The government tells me I have to get my wife pregnant in order to get her insurance. If the government eased off on taxes I could afford insurance for 80 dollars a month, which is less than 700 dollars for other people's medicade. So the democrats say the only way to help the poor is to tax, tax tax. Figure it out voters, those tax dollars go to buddies in congress not the poor. It also pisses me off that my dad's electrical bill was forced to 400 dollars a month, when he lives in a trailer. That 400 dollars a month is part taxed to give somebody else a free utilities.

And nat209, what did the Republicans do for you the last 8 years? You left that out. How did they help you with your income or improve your life during the 20 years they the held national Presidential office over the last 30 years? Most GOP are against all assistance- including Food Stamps, Social Security and other programs. Did the GOP buy the computer you are using, and pay for the internet connection? Or did you go to a public library or Senior Center (that Dems think is important to finance for communities) to use a computer ? Are Libraries and public parks (which are Free) that you may have used at some time in your life, are those bad socialist items too?
And your utility bill is $400 because the GOP relaxed energy standards for all construction-- instead of trying to move the nation toward energy independence.

This is more means for the progressives to lord over your life. If the federal government loves you, it should get the hell out of your way, and if its got a wad of cash to send, it should fricking send it without the red tape and string attached. All they do is steal tax dollars away from local and state govt that would wisely use it to improve your condition. Just look at the BS this congress has voted on and wasted money on and tell me the federal government gives a crap about the common man. The federal welfare state has failed to the tune of over 10 trillion dollars. Time to rethink America. This ship is going down hard. The corrupt politicians profit from it, and we don't care as long as we're amused by the tee vee and can send porno over the mobile phone. Wake up, sheeople!

Nice rant and rave. Unfortunately it's just a bunch of pontificating (oops that's a mighty big word for a liberal, sorry). I hate reading someones opinion as an answer to a question. I prefer facts at least they contain truth.

If any part of the stimulus plan has trouble - and in a package this big, that's bound to happen - the Republicans can campaign against it, and the Democrats. It makes me sad that their politics trumps the well being of the country, which eliminates the possibility of bargaining in good faith.

It's a fundamental difference in how you define "the well being of the country." Dems want to spend billions we don't have while the Repbubs don't. Why isn't anyone asking where we are getting the gobs of "stimulus" money? I wish I could run my own budget like that, making money out of thin air.

For the same reason 7 Democrats voted against it. There is so much pork in this stimulus package. This stimulus idea has been tried in the past and it has failed everytime! It failed for FDR, it failed for Jimmy Carter and list goes on.

The Republicans see the need for a stimulus but it needs to be approached in a different way. Nothing is there to hold people accountable for their failures. We are giving money away to businesses whose management has failed and then we are letting them continue as before, nothing is going to change for the better. HOPE & CHANGE!

The reason we are in the financial mess we are in now is due to uncontrolled GOVERNMENT spending. Both parties are guilty of this! It seems that congress has never seen a spending bill that they can resist.

Republicans are putting their re-election hopes ABOVE the needs of the nation, sadly. And before you say that stimulus spending failed for FDR, perhaps you should go back and review history. U.S. GDP ROSE during the time that FDR spent on new Deal projects, and ONLY retreated when he put the brakes on spending, as was urged by the Republicans at that time.

You said, "Republicans are putting their re-election hopes ABOVE the needs of the nation". This is so correct! Unfortunately, the GOP didn't *just* start behaving this way.. it's been going on for the last 100 years.

Re-election? how do you make voters happy? Dems decided to spend 800 billion dollars on them without telling them their kids will have to pay for it later. Standing up on principle against spending money that we don't have is not a move that will help their general popularity, it's a stand against the wrong plan. That will not win points with the Obama voters. I don't see how that says they are hoping for re-election. If anything it will show the contrast between them and the administration.

Let's see... We're trying to get out of a situation that we got into by spending billions that we don't have.

How do we get out?

Spend billions we don't have.

The Republicans see that it's not going to work.
