The late senator’s wife Vicki Kennedy had been working closely with him on Senate matters the last few years. She would be the natural choice, as is often the case, for a temporary appointment.

It is not clear if the Massachusetts legislature will give the governor the power to appoint someone.

When it comes to the election there are many candidates waiting in the wings but they are not well known outside the state. I won't be able to pick someone to root for until the campaign begins and we see who stands for what.

Massachusetts has been for a generation or more the most liberal state in national politics, despite some local conservatives. One can expect a liberal Democrat to be the eventual Senator.

I have no idea who should replace Ted Kennedy in the Senate.

However, it seems inappropriate that the people of Massachusetts should be left under-represented in the Senate for a period of four months. The best course of action would be to have a prompt election, but since that isn't going to happen, I think the fairest thing to do would be to appoint an interim-Senator who is as close as possible to Ted Kennedy's views.

Not that I necessarily agreed with him on everything, but the people should get what they voted for, and not be deprived of their say during what could be an important four months.

Let's hope there is no BlagoGate over this one.
