What is the best country to escape to when fleeing the United States?

I am highly disturbed by the political and economic direction of the United States and would like to go to a country which still values hard work and freedom.

I hear you on this. I researched it pretty heavily late last year and was disappointed to find basically no better options.

According to the Index of Economic Freedom, Hong Kong is the best place to live in the world, followed by Singapore, for people who value hard work and freedom. http://www.heritage.org/Index/

I can agree slightly with this answer, however if you are over the age of 40 then Ireland or Iceland might be better well suited for you.

Ignoring the second part of your question, and noting the word choices of "escape" and "fleeing", I'll be obtuse and answer it the way I read it:

Over fifty countries lack extradition treaties with the United States, meaning they have no legal obligation to hand you over to US authorities if you are wanted for a crime committed on American soil. That doesn't mean they won't try, especially if you are suspected of terrorism, war crimes or are a considered an enemy combatant. Also consider the fact even though no formal treaty exists, the spirit of international cooperation may foil any attempts to avoid US justice.

At a glance, the closest sovereign nation that has neither diplomatic relationship nor extradition treaty with the USA is Cuba. But it's a small island nation, and the general consensus is that dialog between the two countries will eventually result in re-establishing some form of diplomatic and commercial relationship, especially after Fidel Castro shuffles off this mortal coil. If the statute of limitations on your crime runs about before the advent of the above, Cuba might be a good choice.

NOTE: The above advice is purely hypothetical. I do not advocate fleeing justice. Commit a crime, do the time!

The second part of the question is key. There is no criminal aspect to the query - only political.
