Since the mission of the Department of Commerce is to "promote job creation and improved living standards for all Americans by creating an infrastructure that promotes economic growth, technological competitiveness, and sustainable development."
I think John Thompson is a great choice, he is the CEO of Symantec, (Silicon Valley company) known worldwide for its security technology portfolio, especially the Norton brand of security software and is one of the 10 largest software companies in the world today.
He is a Democrat and one of the nation's highest-ranking African-American business executives. He nurtured Symantec from a small software company to a powerhouse in computer security, storage and systems management.
I've included a link under sources to Thompson's announcement that Symantec committed to support the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact.

The CEO of a company that will endanger its own customers, is not the man for a cabinet position.

I DON'T think he should be nominated for any cabinet post. His company armed China with computer viruses for at least two years during his tenure as CEO. Symantec faced quite a bit of embarrassment when the Wall Street Journal ran a story. The same people who were briefing the White House and the FBI on global cyber threats, were also secretly transferring computer viruses to China. The CEO of a company that will endanger its own customers, is not the man for a cabinet position.
