All key offices in the White House were bugged, as well as telephones, back in 1971, at the suggestion of former President Lyndon Johnson. His stated intention was to create an accurate historical record of the presidency.
Most participants in many taped conversations were not aware of this.
During his life, Nixon did all he could to prevent the 3,700 hours of recordings from public release.
He died in 1994, and five years later the National Archives began releasing the tapes.

Why did President Nixon tape his conversations?
As a non-American I do not have a wide understanding of the history of American presidents. Ive just begun listening to the Nixon tapes, and find them fascinating at times.
What was his motivation in taping them? Were participants in the conversations aware of being taped?
