Who would win in a conventional war, Pakistan or India?

Pakistan and India are not exactly the best of friends and they have already had a few wars with each other. If the two countries were to go to war with only conventional weapons today who would win?

Hands down, it should be India. India has a far more advanced and larger military, and a far larger economy with which to resource and sustain a conventional conflict.

It is difficult, however, to imagine that a sustained conventional conflict could possibly last very long if one were to break out between the two countries. Both are nuclear armed, and there's nothing really to prevent one country from using such weapons in retaliation for any major offensive on the part of the other country.

If one country were to mount a major attack on the other, it would serve as a reasonable cause for the other to mount a nuclear retaliation in the claim of self defense. So I can't really see a major sustained conventional conflict occurring, or remaining conventional for very long, if one were to break out.

I think Pakistan would win over India due to experience. Pakistan has been fighting for decades and is still in conflict, but the last major war India was in was when Britain took it over for themselves.

India has been involved in major wars since its independence. Of the 4 major wars in history between India and Pakistan, India recorded decisive victories in a majority of the conflicts with one resulting in the creation of the state of Bangladesh

bhasky is right. India would win a war, mainly because of the low morale of the Pakistani Army. If it came to nuclear weapons, India would beat Pakistan, but China would be the winner.

Pakistan is a smaller country, with a smaller military force, but in a long run war, that could extend to the cities, Pakistan would resort to terrorism... and that could be a very scary scenario.

I say Pakistan would lose, but with greater human loss in India's big cities, trains, etc...

The correct answer is that it would be a dreadful stalemate that would go on indefinitely.

Just as America can't succeed in Afghanistan, India could not succeed in Pakistan.

Yes, India may be superior in almost every way (just as America is) but just like in Afghanistan, the Pakistanis would dig into the mountains and be unshiftable.

I don't think the United States' actions in Afghanistan are a reasonable model of what a conventional conflict between India and Pakistan would look like. India and Pakistan are neighbors, and either country can throw the full weight of its conventional forces at the other without the need for maintaining bases and supply lines in foreign countries in opposing hemispheres.

Considering the relative military strengths of both countries, I find it hard to believe that Pakistan could maintain a sustained fighting strength in a fight with India. While such a conflict would likely have massive loss of life on both sides, I think India would prevail in this type of conflict in short order, and that "digging in" would have little overall effect, much less a stalemate.

Out of curiosity, other than the comparison to the United States in Afghanistan, is there any compelling reason that you believe Pakistanis "dug in" in mountains would result in a stalemate?
