Has a president ever lost the race in his home state but gotten elected?
Is there a president, who in the presidential election lost his home state (where he was either born or was a senator), but was still elected to be president?

There's a Wikipedia page on the subject, actually. Most recently you could look to George W himself, whose birth state is listed as Connecticut - which he lost.Source(s):

If Wikipedia is to be believed (always a little bit of a worry...), it seems that many candidates have won without winning their birth state, but only three have won despite losing their state of residence, namely Polk, Woodrow Wilson and Nixon. Had Gore won in 2000, he would have been a fourth as he lost Tennessee. Polk is the only one to lose both state of residence and state of birth, and still win overall.
