Yeah I would have to say the worst economy since the great depression might have something to do with the bad unemployment numbers. There have been no significant changes in trade agreements since Clinton was President. So any effect they had on unemployment would have been the status quo for years and not a reason why unemployment is up sharply in the last year.
There are several reasons for the current recession but have not heard anyone blame it on trade agreements. Also the recession seems to be world-wide so it is unlikely that any particular trade agreement would affect everyone so drastically.

Thanks for your input. Hopefully things will start to improve and those numbers will turn around.

When it comes to international trade agreements between countries it is only responsible for a small percentage of the unemployed. The current high unemployment is the result of the current recession. Which is mostly due to the lack of regulations on credit and financial institutions.

I was wondering if that is really the case. I'm finding it harder to find clothing and household goods that are made in the USA and if I do it seems they are hidden among all the imports. I think it should be 50/50 if nothing else. Most recently I became concerned about the tire industry taking a hit. I thik China is taking advantage of us. Many manufacturing jobs we had before are now history and I am confused about how the economy and unemployment will improve without replacing the manufacturing jobs we've lost to other countries. Seems like we started taking in more than we're put out and the trade agreements don't seem to be working.

The US is actually still the largest manufacturer in the world. We just make things that the average consumer wouldn't buy on most days. The companies that make up the country's manufacturing base include GE, Harley Davidson, Caterpillar, and US Steel.

I think from this comment that you may be asking the wrong question. Trade agreements like the North American Free Trade agreement do have an influence on employment. But it seems you are more concerned with how much manufacturing is moving to Asia and elsewhere. A valid concern, but not related to trade agreements as it is normally meant. Yes the US has laws with how we trade with China but it is not the same as a treaty which is binding on both sides. In other words we can change the rules with China fairly easily but not with Canada (I am simplifying here). My point is still valid though, we had low unemployment in 2006-2007 despite many jobs being moved to Asia so there is not a simple answer.
