Ti, a really poor construction worker that struggles to keep his son, Dicky, in private school, mistakes an orb he finds in a junkjard for a toy his son heavily requested from him, since all of the classmates had it. This object turns out to be an alien creature with regenerative powers that will end up teaching important lessons to both father and son, amidst a dramatic turn of events in which Dicky is confronted to the harsh realities of life.

M$It is a very funny movie, set in Hong Kong, and has an English translation. It also has a very happy (family happy) ending.

M$Honestly, most Chinese language films I've seen are of the "tragic art" variety and all have intensely honest scenes/themes that make "family friendly" a tough match.

M$by the way... another Taiwanese movie that - in my opinion - shows an accurate picture of family life in Taiwan is Yi Yi (2000) by Edward Yang. To many it may seem boring and long, but it's a real masterpiece.

Eat Drink Man Woman is one of my favorite movies, too.
But it should have a disclaimer: DON'T WATCH IF YOU'RE HUNGRY! ;-)

M$I did take some time to consider this before posting... Yes there is a lesbian scene. However, it seemed very tastefully done. My husband and I are on the conservative side in our movie tastes preferring things that most people would consider harmless like romantic comedies. We both enjoyed this and I strongly recommended it to both my mother and my in-laws. So, family friendly would depend on the age of the audience. In this case it may be appropriate for in-laws but not young children.
Too bad you can't rate the comments. :))
Thumbs up.
There is a nude lesbian scene in that movie. Movie = Win. Family-friendly? Fail.
Spirited Away, Kung Fu Panda and Mulan are good animated ones, too.

M$CJ7 is Stephen Chow’s 2008 movie about a poor man, his son, and an alien. A heartwarming story about the effort the father puts towards giving his son a good life and especially a good education, even if it means that he has to starve. However their life change when the father finds a new “toy” for his son.
Mixed bag, but ultimately family friendly.
-edit- looks like I took too long to hit reply. Sorry for the dupe.
