How do I play mkv files using Windows 7?

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64x RTM, with all updates. I can not seem to get mkv files to play correctly. I have DivX 7 Pro with all codecs, VLC, and Nero 9, but every time I try to play a mkv file it will start, play about 3-5 seconds, and then close. Anyone know of any ways to fix this, or have any suggestions?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You cant normally play H.264 MKV files in WMP12 or media center as there is no native MKV splitter in Windows 7 though it does natively support the codecs used.

The only way to play such files in media center is to use a registry hack to make them show and install Haali media splitter plus ffdshow tryouts (without resorting to those bad codec packs).

To play MKV files outside of WMP/media center use Media Player Classic Home Cinema or VLC.

It would be a lot better if Microsoft added a simple MKV splitter to Win7 it would stop people asking for it and they have already paid for codecs commonly used in MKV anyway. Plus MKV has no costs attached so they dont have to pay for it.

Maybe you can use a converter to convert your MKV files to some other formats to have a try.
Here I think you can use Total Video Converter which can works well on Windows 7.
It can convert almost any video format, like AVI, WMV, FLV, MP4, 3GP, MOV, MKV, MPEG, etc., such as converting WMV to MP4, WMV to MPEG, MKV to AVI, WMV to AVI, AVI to MPEG, etc..
Furthermore, it can easily convert video files to popular audio files like converting WMV to MP3, AVI to WMA, MKV to AAC, MP4 to MP3, etc.
Download and learn to use it: http://www.imoviesoft.com/help/total-video-converter.html

I suggest you use the tech preview from DivX Labs called Project Remoulade, that has a simple download that supports MKV files to Windows.

"The solution is easy though. DivX Labs has introduced a “tech preview” of what they call Project Remoulade. Part of the project is a simple download that adds support for MKV files to Windows 7. Once installed you’ll get thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer (including details like movie duration), you can watch the videos in Windows Media Player or Media Center, and it can even be streamed to UPNP devices like the Xbox 360 or other extenders. Their most recent release also added support for 64-bit versions of Windows 7 in addition to the already supported 32-bit."
