Planning to see Avatar in Hong Kong, but they warn that "only Chinese subtitles are provided for alien dialogue". Is that a problem?

English-language movies in Hong Kong are all subtitled in Chinese, but things can get slightly messy when there's foreign-language dialogue in a movie which is already subtitled in English. For those who've seen the movie, would you consider it a deal-breaker to be unable to read the subtitles when the aliens aren't speaking English? No spoilers please! :)

The answer depends on what you want to get out of the movie. If all you're interested in is seeing the cool special effects, fight sequences, etc. then not being able to understand the alien language exchanges should not be a deal breaker. However, if you want to get the nuances of the "noble savage" as director James Cameron tried to depict them, you will miss a lot. In my opinion one of the most interesting aspects of the movie was how successfully the director was able to portray the humans as the bad guys, and have us human viewers accept that point of view. Without understanding the alien dialog you will miss most of that. Of course you can always go back and watch the movie again when it comes out on DVD to get that part of it.

Welcome to Mahalo, Thanks for offering an opinion on this question, what would make this opinion more valuable to the asker if you gave a little bit more of a detailed description of what is taken away. I also have not seen the movie, but if I was in the askers situation it would be important to know exactly how much of the movie is going to be lost in the sub-titles?

No...not if you are seeing it in 3d, the alien dialogue or any of the diaologue in the movie is not that relevant. It is not the storyline that is amazing in this movie....It is the awesome graphics and the great 3d effects...Only see this movie in 3d, can't stress that enough. I have seen other 3d movies but was really impressed with how far they have come with 3d technology for this movie. It is a really fun movie for that reason. There is not a lot of alien language as they know most people can't stand subtitles anyway. Go see it you will have lots of fun. Do not go see it if you are expecting an amazing storyline. That is not its strong point, the story is not terrible it is just not as amazing as the graphics. Have fun.
