Hi there, I'm from Switzerland and its great to hear that you are visiting our little but beautiful nation. I hope its not too late when I write this as its already beginning of August. First of all its a pitty because you missed August 1st which is our national day, which is especially pretty in the mountains (Alps) not only because of the fireworks but because they light huge fires on the mountains which you can see from the valleys as a tribute to how the news of Swiss independence was spread in 1291.
That said, there are many lovely places to go in Switzerland. Many famous mountain regions exist, but my personal favorite is the Engadin in the south of Switzerland, close to the Italian border. I spend my summers and winters there as my family has a house there, in St. Moritz to be more precise. It is a region with many lakes and hiking routes. The routes are well connected and there are routes for beginners and the more advanced hikers. On top of this Engadin/St. Moritz boasts a great infrastructure when it comes to lifts and busses to take you to places. There are incredible views, glaciers and mountain lakes to explore.
Engadin also has a very fine cuisine, closely linked to Italian food however also offering Swiss specialities. St. Moritz has excellent restaurants and some of the best hotels in Switzerland. Originally St. Moritz became famous as a village of relaxation and spas, but soon it became a winter hot-spot for the who of the who of Europe's hugh society. The summer is more calm though and the village is less packed.
Certainly check out the Morteratschgletscher (glacier).
Muottas Muragl, great view of the Engadin, nice hiking routes.
Biking tours to Samedan (which also has a small airport for private planes and hobby fliers).
Marguns which you can also reach with a lift or by hiking, go to the restaurant Chadafo (best pizza in St. Moritz) and either keep on hiking from there or go down with a mountain scooter or a bike.
Other restuarants to look at: Chesa Veglia from the Palace Hotel and the Hotel Steffani Restaurant.
Dont worry if you are flying in to Basel, Switzerland has a great public transport system and the train will easily get you to St. Moritz. It would be a train from Basel to Zürich, then change train to Chur and from there to St. Moritz. Just search online on www.sbb.ch for the connections and prices.
Hope that helps. Come back in winter its magical!
