Planning an East Coast Car Trip... please help!
I'll be starting my trip from Mobile, AL.
I know I would like my first stop to be Savannah, GA.
I would also like to stop in Washington, DC and New York, but need pointers on fun, or off beat stuff to do there.
I am willing to travel as far north as time will allow, maybe even Maine.
I grew up on the West Coast and have covered quite a bit of terrain over there, but have yet to discover all of beauty of the East Coast, especially by car.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I have not traveled far down the east coast but I might be able to help with New England.
Traveling here for the first time Rhode Island has a lot to offer. Newport, RI is a great way to begin your trip. Plenty of great shopping, scenery and dining.

It would be hard to mention a trip to New England without saying Nantucket Island. A short ferry ride from Hyannis, Massachusetts to one of the best island destinations in the northeast,
Nantucket will never disappoint, seafood, shopping, beaches and scooter rentals.

In the Fall New Hampshire is one of the most beautiful places on the planet, so a trip through the White Mountain National Forest on the Kancamagus Highway and a stay in North Conway would definitely be in order.

Route 1 travels the coast of Maine and is worth the whole trip alone. From Kittery to Presque Isle the Maine coast is filled with shopping, scenery, beaches, lighthouses, dining, exploring and the best fresh lobster in the world.

M$Thanks for the Cadillac Mt. idea. When I looked at the pictures, it took my breath away!
It's great to have this feedback. I think I'll focus more on the smaller cities and leave New York and DC to another trip all together. (it would take me at least 2 weeks for just those two cities) With cutting out the big distractions, it should leave more time for the sea shore and lobster! Yum!
Savannah, GA - 1 day walking around and dinner will do. (it's a mile by a mile and beautiful)
Shenandoah National Park (U.S. National Park Service) in Virgina - beautiful Skyline Drive
Cape May in New Jersey
Philadelphia - some U.S. history
Newport, Rhode Island
NYC
Bar Harbor, Maine
oh, and if you continue to Cananda, The Bay of Fundy

M$You've got a deal!
I must warn you that more often than not, my eyes are bigger than my stomach!
When I think of back east during that time, I picture allergies, raking leaves and cracked lips. However, if you visit the 310, you will have 70 degree days, gorgeous sunsets, and Disneyland.
What more could you want??

from your and @ssmacd's advice, this looks like it should take 2 weeks min.
