Pink Floyd was one of the pioneering psychedelic rock bands of the late 1960's. Much of their early sound is characterized by experimentation with different styles and mood that were popular during that period. Other big artists like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones had musical motifs suggesting experimenting with psychedelic drugs, and was a defining aspect of their sound.
Early live performances focused on instrumentals that were conducive to a drug induced state. Their early work has many instances of classic psychedelic rock, especially from the 1968 classic Saucerful of Secrets. The second side of the record begins with a musical theme that begins soft and slowly builds to a cacophony of sound. The album cover artwork depicting hazy visions of the band in bubbles reflects this aspect of the culture at the time.
