Time is an interval, and intervals were created by people. Walk from from point A to point B, and calculate the number of steps you took to get from point A to point B, and the number of breaths you took while walking from point A to point B. Time is a measurement. How long did it take you to get from point A to point B. Time is also a number (ie. what time is it?). Time helps people keep track of things in their life.

"People like us who believe in physics know that the distinction between the past, the present and the future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion." - Albert Einstein
Time is:-
Too slow for those who wait,
Too swift for those who fear,
Too long for those who grieve,
Too short for those who rejoice,
But for those who Love
Time is eternity.

The only short answer I can give to your question would be something like this, from a book review on Amazon:

If I had to summarize the book in a paragraph, surprisingly, I would perhaps just write that we probably don't know much. Despite all the progress of the past decades, Time is still a mystery, and the revolution that Einstein started is still very incomplete. His word on the subject won't be the last.

I have the book, and that's a fair summary. :)

What is Time?
I've learned that some believed time is like a river in which you can manipulate the direction it flows. Does that mean time is something physical or an abstract creation of man?

I'm afraid once you start talking about time, using expressions like "something physical" and "abstract creation of man" are extremely problematic, and you'll soon find yourself in the deep water of examining what it means for something to be "physical" or "real". The only short answer I can give to your question would be something like this, from a book review on Amazon:
