Photographers: How do you organize and keep track of all of your photos? Do you do anything special for your favorites?

I use Picasa, I believe that there is an Adobe alternative. Is it better?
Tip for best answer: M$0.22
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I use a program called Memory Manager (from Creative Memories) which allows me to sort my photos:

1. Into a "vault". This allows multiple users to use the same program; each user would have his own vault to store his photos. A separate vault could also be used if you make presentations and want to have photos for that use separated from personal photos.

2. The vault is then separated into "Sort Boxes" (sort of like the shoeboxes we sometimes store developed photos in). These may have general titles: Events, Family, Vacation, etc.

3. The sort boxes are then separated into "Folders" (like the envelopes we get back from the developer).
I may then have a Sort Box titled "Events" with some Folders titled "My Wedding", "Picnic at Grandma's", or "My Son's First Car".

When the photos are first loaded into the "Vault" they can then be assigned a folder (or more, depending on how you want to find them later), given a "star" rating, and then cropped and/or enhanced.

You can then choose which ones you want to print and the program will mark them as having been printed.

The program is very easy to use...I have been using it for three years and would not go to anything else.

I have a dedicated hard drive for only photographs. On this hard drive I will have a root folder called “Photographs”. In this “Photographs” folder I will organize by month, then in each of the “month” folders I will organize by day.
If I have a specific shoot on any given day I will add a folder in that specific “day” folder with the title of shoot. This way all my photographs are structured by date and also sub structured by specific shoots. I find it very easy this way to find files very quickly.
Also in the root “Photographs” folder I will also have four other folders separate from the folders of month and day. These folders I title; “People”, “Places”, “Things” and “Portfolio”. I will copy files into these folders that deserve unique treatment. In the portfolio folder I will copy images that I will then print and compile a harp copy portfolio and also have a digital form of my portfolio as well.
Also I copy this hard drive to three other hard drives, one of which is kept off site. Once my main hard drive fills up (to 80% of the storage capacity) I will then buy another external drive. I only copy the RAW files to the other hard drives; all of the edited photos I keep on a separate drives titled “edits”.
I use Adobe Bridge to access my files quickly and easily.
