The ultimate 2 phones on the market right now are the iPhone and the Blackberry Bold.
There are a lot of iPhone vs. Blackberry debates online, but it really comes down to one question:
Do you rely on e-mail?
If so... have a good look at the Blackberry Bold.

If you do not rely on e-mail... go with the iPhone. The applications are impossible to beat on the iPhone and it really is cooler than Nick's hair while he was in N-Sync in 1996.
However, it will only take 1 single e-mail for you to realize that the iPhone looses with e-mail. It's simply very hard to replace the hard Blackberry keyboard with the iPhone's soft onscreen excuse for a keyboard.

This allows you to customize your phone in an incredibly powerful way. While the Palm Pre seems to be a powerful device as well, it can't match the 3rd party developer support that the iPhone has been enjoying for the past year or so.

If you're looking purely for a phone you might find something that better fits your needs. If you're looking for an all-in-one fantastic mobile device, you'll be hard put to beat it.
Consider the following:
- It's a decent phone with a great interface, e.g. things like visual voicemail
- It's a handheld computer, with more than 40,000 apps available.
- It's the best solution for handheld net access. Whether it's web browsing, Twittering, YouTube, it beats anything else you can carry in your pocket.
- Services like the BBC iPlayer come to the iPhone before any other device
- It has a fantastic screen which makes it a good movie watching device
- Many people read books and newspapers on it
- The iPhone 3GS will have video recording capabilities that will make it a good alternative to things like the Flip
- In case you've forgotten, it's actually an iPod! Yes, a real full blown media player that works with iTunes, delivers good sound, has all the accessories like speakers, cases, FM transmitters you could ever want.
Other devices can beat the iPhone for certain aspects of its functionality.
You want a corporate strength email device? Blackberry is still better.
You want top notch phone quality and making the most of any signal available? There are probably Nokia and Samsung devices that do better.
Want to geek out and get a device to program yourself? You might like Android. (Though if you have a Mac anyway, you might like iPhone even more.)
But I don't think there's anything that can beat the iPhone as an all-in-one package for the general user. And if money is not an issue, the iPhone 3GS is the one to go for.

Im going to say any Android Phone. T-mobile has the G1, but more t-mobile android powered phones are coming this summer.
Other providers also have android phones, but im not sure which ones they are.
Many of the apps are free, which beats iphone. Also, its powered by google which is going to take over the world, so when they do you may as well use their phone.
Im against iphones (i think they are cool and everything), but i have lost more and more respect for apple. I do however have an ipod and macbook, but i think there are much better products for a cheaper price.

What is the ultimate phone to buy?
By "ultimate", I mean it has the looks, the style and the features to credit it as an amazing phone. I am not particularly concerned about the price.
LG Viewty Smart? The iPhone 3G S?

I am partial to the iPhone, but that is mostly becuase I think they look great, and I love the community around developing and distributing the 3rd party applications. Check out the site below for consumer reports.

In my opinion an Ultimate Phone" is yet to come. But for now, iPhone and Pre are the main contenders. so based on the total ownership cost during 2 year period, I would go with Pre. Of course it depends on your specific requirements.

I think nothing can currently beat the versatility of the iPhone 3G(S). This is primarily because of the huge number of 3rd party applications that are now available on the iTunes App Store (around 50,000 apps as of 6/09). http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/06/08/40-million-iphones-and-ipod-touches-and-50000-apps/

The majority of iPhone apps are free too, and there are 40,000+ apps in the app store. Android doesn't have a lot yet from what I hear.

Yes, good value for $99. Though bear in mind you will be locked into a 2-year AT&T plan, so the monthly bills are more important to think about than the unfront $99.

iPhone is ok for entering info on a form, or writing short notes or quick emails, and the device is fine for reading emails of course. But if you want to write much while on the move, a Blackberry or a netbook come into consideration.
But if you get to a computer often enough throughout the day that you don't need to write more than Tweets and short emails on the iPhone, you're fine.
