On my trips to Phoenix, one drive really stands out. It's the Beeline Highway the heads out of Scottsdale/Mesa to the NE. The drive along this highway is classic desert with mountains and suagaro cactus thrown in. The drive and scenery are great and you can go as far as your heart desires... to Payson or on to the Mogollon Rim.

Where are great places to take photographs in Phoenix, Arizona?
I am travelling to Phoenix for two weeks and I am planning on spending a bunch of time taking pictures. I am generally interested in landscape photography and locations with wildlife are a plus. Where would you recommend that I go?
