Not every pit bull is vicious, just like not every Chihuahua is nervous enough to pee all over everything you own.
Yes, the statistics for dog bites makes it fairly clear that pit bulls tend to be one of, if not the, most-dangerous of the various breeds.
This does not, however, mean that all pit bulls are dangerous, or even that the majority of them are dangerous. There are plenty of pit bulls here in the States who never do anything even remotely aggressive, so it's not like owning one, or being around one, guarantees a problem.
The source that I just cited makes mention of the fact that you cannot look at a dog's breed and determine if that particular dog is "safe" or not. Any dog could potentially attack you, provoked or unprovoked, regardless of its breed.
So, it's not a good idea to stereotype any breed as far as viciousness goes. There are plenty of peaceful, laid-back pit bulls out there who never turn on anyone, just as there are so-called "harmless" Chihuahuas who do their best to gnaw off your feet.

I personally think a pitbull is the best dog to own. They are not vicious if you don't train them to be. I had a pitbull and it was the best dog I have ever owned. They are loyal and well behaved. They are protective of their owners, that is why people think they are dangerous. Any dog can attack you and be vicious it does not matter what type of dog it is, it just matters on how they are trained.
