Why do some dogs "kick back" after they use the bathroom?

When my dog goes, he kicks back and seems to be trying to cover what he just did. It's hilarious, but I wondered why they do it?

They do this to spread their scent around. They could also do it to cover up another dogs scent or to cover up if they are ill.
