The answer is simple but not necessarily easy. Whenever you reach the point that you cannot properly care for your dog (or other pet) as they need and deserve, you should surrender the dog, preferably to someone you know will take good care of them, or at least to a rescue shelter.

This can be the result of your circumstances changing such that you cannot afford to care for the dog, that your living arrangements no longer allow for a dog (e.g. your new landlord does not allow pets), that the dog poses a danger to your newborn child, or that you're too ill to care for the dog. It could also be the result of finding out that your dog's character is such that it presents a danger to you, your family, or others.

I would surrender my dog if they were untrainable or extremely violent towards people or other dogs or if i live in a small apartment or home that would not allow the dog to exercise the correct amount. Exercising you animal helps lower behavior problems because the have less energy and are happier they got to play outside.

This is a sensitive subject. When you can no longer properlly care for your dog or other animal then it would be best to surrender them so that the situation soes not get dire. Animals not properly cared for suffer in so many ways and some may become aggressive and hurt an innocent person. It is best to think of the animal involved and if they are not getting proper food, water, exercise, affection, etc then it is probably best you surrender them .
