The original Morris, a 1968 rescue from the Humane Society named "Lucky", died in 1975. He was replaced in his role as Morris by another rescue named "Harry". Another cat, as yet unspecified, has recently been found to continue playing the role.
All cats playing the part must be rescues, and Morris himself was depicted as rescuing a kitten in the ad campaign in 2006. He is spokescat for the Morris Million Cat Rescue campaign as well as Nine Lives Cat food.
Morris has been the subject of a biography and has "written" three books of his own.
