Next Question
Definitely a dog.
In fact, in my opinion, a Yorkshire Terrier is the best pet you can have. They are small enough to be carried and to curl up on your lap, so they are great for travelling and for snuggling with. Plus, they do not shed hair, so are great for allergy sufferers and your clothes won't get covered in dog hairs. They have wonderful personalities, being both cute and feisty at the same time. They are capable of managing a good walk, but also content to sit at home or indulge in a game of fetch, which means they are suitable for apartment dwelling as well as living in houses. They do not cost much to feed, but they do appreciate a sweater or t-shirt if the weather is cold.

"The Pomeranian is the smallest member of the Spitz family of northern breeds and is a descendent of sled dogs from Iceland and Lapland. Although the original Pomeranian weighed up to 30 lbs (13.5 kg), today, the Pom is one of the most popular of the Toy breeds.
He makes a wonderful family companion with his docile temperament, intelligence and devotion. He is a very good watchdog being very defensive of his home and family. He is also fearless when it comes to other dogs, even those much larger than himself. Known to have a "big dog" attitude, the Pom is alert, active and very easily trained. "

They are a very feisty breed (much like those Chihuahuas)
They are very kind and gentle to their owners while at the same time assuring that rodents, cats, badgers and the occasional mountain lion don't come near your property.
And although not quite as portable as a Chihuahua, they don't take up a lot of space.
Plus they are as cute as bunnies!

There's no one particular breed that I prefer, because there are too many homeless cats (AND dogs) of all breeds, including mixed. I also despise pet mills, and pet shops that support them, so I'm just going to keep giving homeless kitties what I can give them, regardless of what they look like or whether they have registration papers or not.
Oh, and for cat allergies, it can really help to find a dry shampoo that cuts dander. Most cats hate water, so giving them a regular bath is just...insane. But the dry shampoos that cut dander? Well, to some of the cats, that's almost exactly like being petted, judging by their purring and other positive responses.

I would personally argue that a cat is the best pet to have (and this from a former "not a cat person"). They have enough personality to keep you entertained (one of mine was doing a Bruce Lee impression trying to catch a fly today), but are independent enough that you can leave them alone for a few days without a lot of worry.

A dog, specifically a Pomeranian. They are friendly, don't need a lot of space, don't eat very much and have a great personality. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wayne_d/965877619/in/set-72157594434127843/

I love my Pom. She loves the Grandkids and they love her. They always enter her in a local dog contest and she always places. Last year they put pom poms on her and called her the Pom Pom Pomeranian. She won second place. She has added lots of love an laughs to our family!

Dogs are individuals so your experience may differ but our Pomeranian is protective but not aggressive and very friendly. I took her to my office the other day and she ran around and visited all the people in the room. She didn't bark or otherwise get so excited that she was unmanageable. Her is a picture of her at her most aggresive. (actually playful)

Definitely a neglected cat or dog. It may not be the best best for you, but it will be the best thing to happen to that pet. Neglect is cruel and you will alway feel good about being a part of the life of an animal who appreciates your thoughtfulness in their own doggy or meowy way. Adopt a best friend.

I've had ferrets since 1985 and have loved every minute of it since their demeanor is a cross between a cat and a dog. They have been my favorite pets, though I have had many types of pets over the years- cats, dogs, horse, turkey, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, etc etc Even took care of someone's pet skunk once!!

Unfortunately they are as the state law there for some reason classifies them as a wild animal, when they have been domesticated since before the cat. There are however many people in California that own ferrets illegally, and hopefully soon the law will be changed. If you look up Ferrets Annonymous, this is a group in California that has many owners as members and is one of many organizations working to change this stupid law.

I think it's cuz they breed really fast, and they can hide really well in walls and stuff.

They cannot survive in the wild because they have been domesticated for so long so they cannot fend for themselves, nor know how to look for food. A ferret that gets loose outside can only survive 2 days if that. Unless you are breeding ferrets, they are fixed immediately- otherwise if they don't breed they can succumb to many different diseases and die. Many people keep their ferrets in a separate room. Others ferretproof their home.

haha, so cute! How aggressive are they? For a first time dog owner, how much attention would they need and do they have a ton of energy?

I'm going from my experience, which was a black Dachshund named Shatzie (sweetheart in German).
She was extremely gentle with me and my sister. But they were originally bred to hunt badgers and occasionally you could tell.
Shatzie for some reason didn't like red-heads and did take a few snips at the neighbor boy. But nothing too extreme.
But cats and other smaller animals can cause different reactions. Shatzie was known to dispose of a few neighborhood cats, but also later lived happily with two cats in our house (one of them swiped her in the nose early on after she barked, and Shatzie learned the lesson)
They also sometimes forget their (lack) of size and can pick a fight with the neighborhood pit bull now and then.
This is a pretty accurate description here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dachsund#Temperament
They are full of energy. I remember her once pulling me down the road while I was on a bicycle holding on to her leash.
Shatzie loved attention but was a house dog and we left here alone in the house without too much incident (other then a few wee wees in her favorite corner if Mommy made her mad)

Even though my cats make my sinuses go wonky - ESPECIALLY the new kitten, because she just LOVES to shed all over everything, but especially me! - I love 'em. They each have their own personalities, and after you spend enough time with a particular cat, you can tell his or her noises from those of other cats. My cats each have particular meows that they use, so I don't even have to turn to look to know that it's Trouble, trying to tell me that it's time to feed her. It all depends on where you live. If your looking for a comanion than a fish, hamster, gerbil, or bird aren't right for you. If your living in an apartment than I wouldn't get a dog, because maybe the landlowner wouldn't let you have it. Don't waste your money, know what type of animal is right for you. A lifeless one doesn't give you much company and doesn't need much caring for or One that always gives you company and needs alot of care and attention. Which one is right for you?

Corn Snakes are an amazing animal they don't require a lot of work they don't mess up your house with pee stains and poop around the house. They don't chew up your shoes or throw around garbage. Corn Snakes are fun to watch and interesting creatures. The mess they make in their cage is small. They don't eat you out of house and home. Plus they keep most people from invading your private room cause most people are affraid of them lol.

When it comes to getting an animal, I always like to recommend a beer. Not just any beer; but, the legendary Booneville Beer from Anderson Valley in California. Of course, one would need a large house and plenty of yard for it to graze in. The legality, not to mention availability, of the Booneville Beer as a pet undoubtedly varies from state to state and country to country. Nevertheless, to the best of my knowledge none has ever been reported as causing the least bit of trouble as a household pet. They are much larger and cooler than the average pet but appear to be quite safe.
