What are some of the smartest pets?

Try to have some from different species: such as some that are mammals, reptiles, rodents, etc.

Thanks! I'm trying to pick out a new pet, and I want a smart pet!

I would love to have an African Grey Parrot, if cicurmstances allowed.

(Also in the US, African Gray Parrot.)

However they do need a lot of looking after, in part as they are very bright and need lots of stimulation. Their intelligence has been said to be comparable to a child several years old.

Read about African greys and some famous examples at the links below.

-- Quote

Before Pepperberg's work with Alex, it was widely believed in the scientific community that birds were not intelligent and could only use words by mimicking, but Alex's accomplishments indicated that birds may be able to reason on a basic level and use words creatively. Pepperberg wrote that Alex's intelligence was on a par with that of dolphins and great apes. She also reported that Alex had the intelligence of a five-year-old human and had not even reached his full potential by the time he died. She said that the bird had the emotional level of a human two-year-old at the time of his death.

They live a long time. Sources disagree on the average lifespan, but most say fifty years or more. The famous one called Alex died aged 31, of unknown causes, having been seemingly in good health and still in his prime. That's another reason buying one is not to taken on lightly!

I want a pet that can live a long time, but I think that's a little TOO long!

A parrot is not just for Christmas. It really is for life. :)
