I call it "crazy feral dog that has to be in control" mode.
Sometimes dogs get in a frenzy thinking they have to protect you from what they think are dangers or hazards.

I have read Cesar Millan's books on dog behavior and now understand why my dog does all these crazy things.
Once you work at being the pack leader, your dog can take it easy not feel the need to protect you all the time.

It's a great book.

Depending on the age of your dog, he/she may need to be socialized a little better. There is a basic training guide I used for my dog at this website http://helpwithpettraining.com
