No it is not good to feed most dogs dairy products because most do lack the enzyme lactase. Diarrhea is a common side effect of giving them dairy products.

Why? Simply because their nutrition is coming from puppy chow which has everything they need and everything they would get from the dairy products.
That being said, my father says that his dog's were all brought up on milk and bread. However, this was India and the breeds were generic...years ago.
With the spread of disease and other illnesses surrounding dogs...i would be cautious and follow my vet's advice....for the most part. ;)

• I appreciated all of the answers here, but the link with the easy-to-digest (ugh, bad pun alert) table is one I bookmarked. Thanks, all. --mm

Thanks, flo (love your raps, btw). That chart in the link is great, too - interesting about macadamia nuts and grapes. (I'm allergic to the former - wonder if I'm part canine.)

Funny you should ask this. We just got a puppy 3 days ago and I asked the VET the same question. Her answer....NO it is not OK. Why? Simply because their nutrition is coming from puppy chow which has everything they need and everything they would get from the dairy products.

Tarun, Thanks for your answer (the first answer I've received on Mahalo). I think that what your vet said is similar to what mine told me some time ago. But, I think our vets didn't give us as complete an answer as floridarider's did (below).
BTW, I saw the picture you posted of your new puppy - congratulations and have fun with that cutie!

Thanks, omicron. (It was cottage cheese that prompted my question, actually.)
