As the Honolulu Zoo states on this site
http://www.honoluluzoo.org/pets.htm
"Even if legal at the state level, numerous cities and counties have made it against the law to keep a pet monkey"
They also say:
"Keeping a non-human primate as a pet is just not a good idea"
I would suggest reading all the information on the above site and this site

before even thinking about acquiring a monkey as a pet!
I would strongly encourage you to research this before giving it some serious thought. If you love being around monkeys, maybe you could look into volunteering for a rescue group that covers exotic animals?

Depending on what state you live in, assuming you do live in the United States, there are various levels of legality in dealing with monkey ownership. This site should tell you exactly what your limitations are, if any, and more information on the matter. http://www.petmonkeyinfo.org/laws.htm

As with many exotic pets, there might be a state law that either allows or bans people owning a monkey. Skater provided a list above about state laws and requirements, so I'd see where your state is listed before you attempt to buy a monkey. (Actually, it's much the same for ferrets too. I can own one in TX, but can't own one if I live in CA).
