How do you define "Exotic pet"?

Many species are illegal in various countries to keep as pets.

What species do you think are acceptable as "exotic pets"?

What species should stay illegal, for the health of the animal and potential danger to people?

Thanks to celebrities, many people want to have a primate, wild-cat, or large snake as a pet. Sometimes this is legal depending on the animal.

Are there animals you wish were banned to keep as pets?

Why?

Reptiles are one kind of exotic pet that is extraordinarily common. Most commercial pet stores carry several species of reptile, and some of them even carry animals such as the Burmese Python pictured to the right and even Caimans (a form of crocodilian). On occasion even baby alligators can be found at exotic pet shows!

I would say any pet that you cannot buy at a big box pet store would be considered exotic.

An exotic pet would be a pet that is outside of the ordinary pet category (ie. dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, hamsters, gerbils, birds, etc.) Exotics could also include Psitaccines (parrots), reptiles, and amphibians. I don't believe it should be illegal to own a particular species, but I do believe there should be a certification process for ownership, which should include extensive education about the species to be owned, as well as how to house and feed it. There should also be a license and licensing fee imposed. The animal should also have to be microchipped, and the owner should have to assume absolute liability for the animal and its actions. The owner's IQ should also need to be higher than the animals!
