How can I get my dog to stop digging?

He keeps digging in the most annoying locations. Now he is digging right at the back entrance to the house and if you're not watching it is easy to twist an ankle.

Get the dog a sandbox to redirect his digging, after all he/she is a dog and they love to dig. Bury treats and toys in the sandbox for him/her to discover. I had this problem with a shepherd and it really works. If you keep up with redirecting his/her interest in the box, this will encourage the dog to go to the box since he will always find a reward and it will save your yard.

My dogs do not dig. The one did when young. You need to watch them. Just like house training if they make a mistake it is your fault. You need to watch them and prevent them ever digging. If the dog really loves to dig then you should give them one place where they are allowed to dig and train them to only do it there.

Actually, I have cured several dogs from digging (one EXCAVATED), by fiilling the holes that they dug and then burying some of their own doggie droppings about 2 to 3 inches down. I then covered them with dirt. The dog came back to dig, didn't like what he found, and then either dug somewhere else, or found something else to do. I never had to repeat the process very many times before they decided it just wasn't that fun anymore. At any rate, it's a cheap solution and keeps the yard clean!
